Is August 'Divorce Month'?

August tends to be a month of endings. Vacations conclude. Summer comes to a close. And a new report indicates that many marriages come to an end. According to a recent article from the Atlantic, August is one of two months when divorces hit a yearly high.

Why Do People Get Divorced In August?

While there is no hard evidence that ties August's increase in divorces to any particular event, the article offers some suggestions. One possible reason is that spouses want to avoid getting divorced around a major family holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving, particularly if there are children involved.

However, the more likely reason has to do with vacations. Obviously, summer is a big time for couples and families to go on trips. After these trips, spouses may come to the realization that they're not going to be able to overcome their differences. In some cases, perhaps the vacation represented one last opportunity for spouses to come together, and when that does not happen they proceed with a divorce upon returning home.

Divorcing When The Time Is Right

Divorce can be an intense process. If it is something you are considering, it is important to understand that you can move forward whenever the time is right for you. This might mean scheduling it around certain events, or moving forward at a time that you feel the process will be easier for your children.

Be aware that you are welcome to discuss your situation with an experienced divorce attorney, who may be able to help you identify timing issues that you might not have considered and allow you to plan for the least stressful divorce process.

At Scardina Family Law, we welcome the opportunity to discuss the possibility of divorce with you. Whether you are ready to move forward now or you want to plan ahead, we can provide the guidance you need to divorce on your terms and in your own time.
