Are Millennials Lowering The Divorce Rate?

In recent years, Millennials have been blamed for everything from declining napkin sales to reduced interest in golf. However, new studies are crediting this generation with a much more positive change: reducing the rate of divorce.

"Deeply Invested In Commitment"

According to an article from The Denver Channel, people under 45 are getting divorced with less frequency than preceding generations. This includes Millennials, as well as members of Generation X. The article cites statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau.

There may be a variety of reasons for this shift. First of all, the trend is to get married later, as opposed to the Baby Boomer generation, who tended to marry at a younger age. Millennials and Generation X members have devoted more time to building careers, traveling and other pursuits prior to settling down and getting married. However, even those Millennials and Generation X members who get married younger have a lower divorce rate than their counterparts in the Baby Boomer generation.

One Millennial interviewed for the article said simply that he and others in his generation are "deeply invested in commitment."

Divorce Is Still A Viable Option

While the divorce rate may be lower among Millennials and members of Generation X, and trending down as a whole, it should still be seen as a viable option. Even for those who wait to get married and deeply value commitment, the reality is that people change and other factors may come into play that make getting divorced the right choice.
