Yes, there are headgear laws for Colorado motorcycles

Summer’s coming to Colorado and what sounds better than motorcycling around the Mile-High City sunshine?

Do you really want to wear a helmet?

Everybody knows riding a motorcycle is a lot more dangerous than driving a car, at least statistically speaking. But riders are going to ride, and statistics may never change that.

In 2018, one out every six traffic fatalities in Colorado was a motorcyclist, but only one out of every 27 vehicles was a motorcycle. Few bikers will be stunned to hear this.

Before you (or your kids) mount a motorcycle for the summer, let’s review Colorado’s rules for motorcycle headgear.

Helmets are optional, unless

Helmets probably save more biker’s lives than anything short of staying home. But whether you’re the bike operator or a passenger, helmets are optional in Colorado. In other words, you have a right to ride without a helmet.

People under 18 years old are an exception. They must wear helmets. In fact, even if you’re 18 or older, you can’t ride with an underage passenger who isn’t wearing a helmet.

For these helmet-required situations, our state’s standards are met by U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmets. Check the label. Helmets approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the Snell Memorial Foundation meet even higher standards.

You must protect your eyes well

Eye protection is required for all motorcycle operators and passengers in Colorado. Eyeglasses are inadequate, and sunglasses at night are prohibited. Even a windshield on the bike doesn’t count.

The Colorado DOT recommends a helmet with clean visor in good condition.

Colorado really might be the most beautiful biking state in the country. If you get to know the riding skills, your bike, and your rights and obligations under the law, you’ll improve your chances for a safe and enjoyable summer.
